Twelve Minerva University students have been selected to participate in the prestigious Millennium Fellowship, a global initiative to support projects that advance the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
More than 44,000 students from 3,300 campuses applied for the opportunity, but only 9% of campuses were selected. Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Yale, and Stanford are some of the other U.S. institutions that will host this year's 4,000 Millennium Fellows.
Sponsored by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and the Millennium Campus Network (MCN), the semester-long program fosters student action and unites young leaders. Students design and lead their own impactful programs. They also attend sessions to enhance their skills in budgeting, goal setting, team management, pitching, and collaboration.
The selection committee looks for projects that will make a "meaningful, measurable impact" within a few months. Minerva students are focusing on the Sustainable Development Goal of quality education. They plan to partner with local organizations serving students in less-developed regions. They will then establish a network of volunteer teachers or create pre-recorded lessons to provide students with instruction on language and computer skills in an effort to help them find jobs.
"Our Millennium Fellows represent a talented group of students eager to address global challenges and contribute to a more sustainable and just world," said Minerva University President Mike Magee. "Their commitment to these principles exemplifies Minerva's dedication to fostering responsible leaders and global citizens."
